Troubleshooting
Last updated: May 2026 | Reviewed by OPTV Support Team
Most OPTV UK issues fall into a small number of categories, and most of them have a quick fix. This troubleshooting guide is ordered from the simplest checks to the more specific fixes. Work through it in order: if a step resolves the issue, you do not need to keep going.
Quick checks before raising a ticket
Before anything else, do these four quick checks. They resolve a surprising number of complaints:
- Restart your streaming device. A full power-cycle (unplug, wait ten seconds, plug back in) clears most transient issues.
- Restart your router. Same as above for your home network.
- Check the service status page. If we are aware of a wider issue, it will be noted there.
- Confirm you are signed in to the correct account. A surprising amount of "it is not working" turns out to be a typo at sign-in.
Buffering and playback issues
Buffering is usually a network problem rather than a service problem. Work through the list below in order:
- Test your network speed on the same device where the issue is happening. If the speed is low, the rest of the streaming chain cannot fix it.
- Move the device closer to the router or, ideally, connect it with an Ethernet cable.
- Check for other heavy network use in your home (downloads, backups, large updates) and pause them while testing.
- Switch to the 5 GHz band on your router if your device supports it and you are on 2.4 GHz.
- Restart the streaming app after making any of these changes.
Login and account problems
If you cannot sign in:
- Confirm you are using the exact credentials shown in your customer area.
- Type the credentials into a notes app first, then copy them over, to rule out typos.
- If you have recently reset your password, make sure the device is using the new one.
- If your account is showing as expired, check your subscription status and renewal date in the customer area before assuming there is a fault.
Picture quality and stream stability
If the stream plays but the picture is poor, look at these in order:
- Connection stability. A connection that is fast on average but unstable will deliver inconsistent picture quality. Wired is the most stable; modern 5 GHz wireless is the next best.
- Device load. If your device has many other apps running, close them and try again.
- App version. Make sure your streaming app is up to date.
- Device age. Older devices struggle with modern streams. The device compatibility page covers what to look for.
App will not open, freezes, or crashes
If the app itself is misbehaving:
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart the device.
- Clear the app's cache (the steps vary by platform; the matching setup guide covers it).
- If problems persist, reinstall the app from scratch.
If you are on a Firestick, smart TV, or Android device, use the specific guide for your platform: Firestick, smart TV, or Android.
When to contact the OPTV Support Team
If you have worked through the steps above and the issue still persists, raise a ticket. To get the fastest useful reply, include:
- What you were doing when the issue started.
- The device you are using.
- Any error message you see.
- The fixes you have already tried.
That information lets the OPTV Support Team skip the questions we would otherwise have to ask back, and gets you to a resolution faster.

Frequently asked questions
My stream worked yesterday but not today. What changed?
Most "it worked yesterday" cases come down to a temporary network issue, an app update, or a device reboot that did not happen. Run the quick checks at the top of this page first.
Why is buffering worse in the evening?
Evening peak hours saturate many home networks. Switching to wired Ethernet, or to a less congested band, usually helps.
How do I tell whether it is my service or my network?
Run a network speed test on the same device. If the speed is low or unstable, the network is the bottleneck. The service status page tells you whether we are aware of a service-side issue.
Raise a ticket with the details listed above and the OPTV Support Team will pick it up.
